Washington, DC always seems to be an island unto itself.  Perhaps they have been so insulated from the everyday concerns of the American public that they are unsure of the difficult road ahead.

The world seems to be in turmoil.  The European Union is under significant stress.  Middle East governments are dropping one after another.  China relies on a growth model based on an under-valued currency, high levels of exports, and low domestic consumption.  The United States has operated with too much consumer consumption and debt for at least a generation.  When the world is experiencing this many fundamental changes at once, the need for American leadership is greater than ever.  Will we get our act together?

I sometimes wonder where the big ideas are.  In this world of immediate access to anything we want to know, why aren’t there more ideas to deal with the truly large and serious issues facing our country and the world?  Perhaps all this information is getting in the way of actually doing something with it.
